Whether you were planning a trip there or not, Missouri is a great place to get some serious sightseeing done. Granted, you probably didn’t know that, but with that gigantic arch overshadowing everything, it’s easy to miss out on so many good things to do in St. Louis.

Whether you have an afternoon or a week, St. Louis promises to keep you busy with excursions you’ll remember for a lifetime. Here are a few ideas to prime the pump.

Who’s ever heard of a vegan bakery/art studio? Well you have now. Visit Sweet Art for the best of both of these worlds. Enjoy food fare, including vegan deserts and snacks while taking in the vibrant environs. Don’t forget to visit the working art studio in the back where you may get a chance to see artists at work.

Things to do in St. Louis for the family and kids? No problem. Visit the St. Louis Zoo. It’s a free visit, and it offers hours of entertainment and discovery. More than 700 species make the St. Louis Zoo their home. For a modest charge, the train that surrounds the zoo’s grounds will show off the menagerie to observers of all ages.

If you like to imbibe (responsibly!) as part of your travel experience, you won’t want to miss Tower Grove. This “lush” area boasts many a local pub, bar, and would-be speakeasy with a huge variety of personalities and offerings.

The St. Louis, Missouri Botanical Garden is also a family-friendly treat, complete with Japanese gardens, an orchid display, and nearly 80 acres of other gardens and beautiful natural spectacles. There’s a tour available too — so learn a little something while you’re there!

The St. Louis of postcards and travel brochures won’t likely mention the latest changes of historic Cherokee Street. All manner of coffee shops, old school record stores, galleries, and leftover antiques dealers will prove there are truly things to do in St. Louis for everyone.

Of course, there is the practically mandatory visit to the St. Louis Gateway Arch. Of all the things to do in St. Louis, this is surely the most well known — and for good reason. The complete tour of the arch is not for the weak-stomached — it takes you all the way to the top of this 630-foot monster monument and the experience has a reputation for creating a life-long memory for the scrapbook. Complete with Museum of Westward Expansion on site and even a riverboat cruise, this “Gateway to the West” is also home to the real-live Courthouse where the Dred Scott court case was carried out in the 19th century.

Of course, there are many other exciting, cheap, and even free things to do in St. Louis. Whether you go there with the kids in tow or just have a few hours to kill on a business trip, don’t miss out on some of these well-kept secrets of Missouri.
